Sector Specific Quality Standards?

Just out of curiosity, what industrial sectors have their own quality standards? That is in addition to ISO9001: 2015.

There's 16949 and the AS standards for aerospace. What about others? Pharmaceutical must have their own. What about shipbuilding, space, large engineering sectors? Is there something specific about those sectors that do have their additional standards that led to it happening?

I used to be in automotive, small company that didn't get 16949, but am now in a sector without additional standards for our division, as far as I know. Well, kind of customer standards I suppose that are probably equivalent.

I just wondered if anyone knew a bit about this.

To me, the answer is obvious. The ISO 9001 “vanilla” requirements don’t address specific and explicit risks in those sectors.

And let’s remember, not only expanded requirements are added to the standards, but, and more importantly, augmented conformity assessment schemes are put in place in order to “ensure” only competent auditors are allowed in those industries (in theory).

In addition to the ones you mentioned, Telecommunications, Medical Devices, Nuclear Power, Rail, Healthcare, etc have their own sector specific QMS standards.

Not sure whether specific risks point also applies to other sectors without additional requirements added. Well I guess you could add defence to the list that has extra requirements or at least their own version of 9001 plus. What about safety critical sectors like shipbuilding, non nuclear power sector, etc?

Mind you I reckon of a sector has a need for such things they'll develop it. We're far enough into this for demand to have surfaced so I'm probably asking irrelevant questions.

Since you didn't say which industry you are in now, maybe scrolling through the following list of ISO MSS could be relevant to you:
