IP67 Rating on a class II wearable medical device question

Its not clear whether a device must operate as normal while submerged or if the standard means that the device will remain leak free while under water but not used as normal while under water. I don't see any reason why the device would be expected to operate as if it were not submerged. IE why would any one want to press a button on a device when they have fallen into a pool.

Sorry for the late response - was hoping someone would jump in. I think a lot depends on the device itself. Are there any essential performance requirements? If you're just talking about 60601-1 and IP rating testing (and there are no essential requirements), I *think* that the device just can't expose a hazardous situation during the testing.
