Hydrogen as an energy source has been investigated for some time, especially for cars and trucks. It has simply never reached a stage where it is feasible at scale.

Actually, one of the most odd, but interesting, energy sources is still nuclear... It has come up several times since the 1940's...

Curiosity...is this new? Weren't hydrogen fuel cells generating electricity used back in the Apollo missions?
Granted, perhaps fuel cells are now efficient enough for propulsion quantities of electricity...but the technology isn't all that new...
