I recently had our yearly FAA inspection at my repair station. Our PI asked how do we check a part number falls under our ratings? I have looked everywhere can cant seem to find anything to check in what rating ( Instruments, Accessories , Powerplant ect.) a specific part number would pertain too.

Per our Ops Spec We can do any instrument, radio, or accessories as long as I have the proper housing, technical data, tooling, and test equipment. Now how can i prove a certain PN falls within one of the ratings?

A part number is just a unique identifier the OEM uses classify an article in their catalog. To ensure the article falls within one of the ratings, you would have to understand how the article operates and compare that to definitions provided in § 145.59 Ratings. For example,

(e) Instrument ratings.

(1) Class 1: Mechanical. A diaphragm, bourdon tube, aneroid, optical, or mechanically driven centrifugal instrument used on aircraft or to operate aircraft, including tachometers, airspeed indicators, pressure gauges drift sights, magnetic compasses, altimeters, or similar mechanical instruments.

(2) Class 2: Electrical. Self-synchronous and electrical-indicating instruments and systems, including remote indicating instruments, cylinder head temperature gauges, or similar electrical instruments.

(3) Class 3: Gyroscopic. An instrument or system using gyroscopic principles and motivated by air pressure or electrical energy, including automatic pilot control units, turn and bank indicators, directional gyros, and their parts, and flux gate and gyrosyn compasses.

(4) Class 4: Electronic. An instrument whose operation depends on electron tubes, transistors, or similar devices, including capacitance type quantity gauges, system amplifiers, and engine analyzers.

My answer to the PI would be, "We get the CMM for the part, read the Description and Operation and compare it to the definitions of §145.59. We can also use the ATA code to assist"
