At some point asking for parts that are difficult to produce/source will catch up with you. Many suppliers will refuse to quote a part that will be tough for them to make and will produce so much scrap its not worth it.
Sorry - not sure of your point?

Not directed at you specifically just that it's better to source common parts than custom parts. A custom fastener for example is going to create problems down the line. A supplier engineer has to create a custom tool to make the part, that engineer may quit or be promoted losing knowledge. That custom tooling will wear over time creating new part variance that might not appear until years later. The custom tooling will wear in ways not seen before leading to problems downstream never seen before. They also tend to be more expensive and if that supplier goes out of business production is seriously threatened as purchasing cannot solve this problem alone.

Agree. Custom parts lead to single source suppliers too. If you have supplier problems then it’s tough to leave. Single source suppliers are often necessary for new products but those present even worse dangers…

So true. I once had a supplier of a custom thermal cutout (UL listed) for our electric motors that was a 20+ year-old design. The original supplier was bought out by another company that promptly transferred all their products, shut down the original supplier's facility and terminated all the employees. We subsequently ran into a temperature calibration problem, and the new supplier was helpless to correct it because they didn't even understand how it worked.
