Calibrating or Verifying Metal or Steel Tape Measures

Thanks for some common sense. Good tape measures can be used to measure and mark in ½ millimeters or 1/64” measurements. In most designs, accurately matching what is on the plan saves time and money.
A tape measure is a very common easy to use measuring device. It is fast and cost effective for many jobs, but not every job.

according to the mechanical characteristics of the measuring tape dont you think that "verifyed until damaged' lable is enough?

Damaged Tape Measures can often be repaired and recalibrated. We found that you must first find a new tape measure that is accurate, as most are not. It usually takes 5 minutes at the store to check 10 tape measures before I purchase one that is accurate.

For what it's worth, ASME has come out with B89.1.7-2009, Performance Standard for Steel Measuring Tapes, ANSI approved I believe. It seems fairly complete.

Doug, I would be interested to hear what you find that is not accurate? The markings and increments are actually off? Also, what do you use to check them at the store?

How do you determine a 10ft tape measure (or any length beyond 6") is accurate by examining the first 6 inch's!?

I have a question of calibrating steel rules. We have a procedure where we compare it against a micro-vu measuring system. However, I am trying to figure out what tolerance is acceptable. Any thoughts
