In the case of manufacturing, with multiple product lines, you can use a corrective action designed to solve a problem in one process or product line, as a preventative in another process or product line.

So you did an F.M.E.A. and did a risk matrix and found this to be a high risk, and it has not yet occured. This is a preventative.

I had some concern with regard to Preventive Action. During our recent customer audit, our customer ask the significance of the Preventive Action in our Corrective Action Report form and Such action can only be implemented through FMEA. Now I had some doubts with regard to the definition of Prevent Recurrence. My concern is how to the differentiate Preventive Action versus Prevent Recurrence? :frust:

Is it possible to request for a sample application of the said action? Please advise.

As per the standard definitions, the action to 'prevent recurrence' is no more than a Corrective Action.

Raffy,

Stopping recurrence of nonconformity is corrective action such as when you have cross-functional team remove the causes of a costly product nonconformity from the system so that type of nonconformity cannot happen again.

Preventing occurrence of nonconformity is preventive action and this may be the result of risk management when designing products and processes. Most of what ISO 9001 specifies is preventive such as leadership, planning, controlling processes, controlling documents and training.

In the case of TS16949, that sort of thing is included in corrective action:

8.5.2.3 Corrective action impact
The organization shall apply to other similar processes and products the corrective action, and controls implemented, to eliminate the cause of a nonconformity.

So it wouldn't be appropriate to call it preventive action. ISO 9001 doesn't have that provision, so what's learned from a corrective action and is applied to other processes may be counted as preventive action.

First you should ask yourself if adding people addresses the cause of the problem. It seems to me that people are masking the real causes. Why is call volume up? Addressing that would prevent the calls in the first place and focus on the real problem. Otherwise you are preventing the defect from occurring but your are not addressing the root cause of the call volume increase so it is not really a preventive action.
