True Sydney. I can't possibly audit every word in there (mine is 9001, their cert is to 9011). Nor would I ask for other suppliers' information. I am given a full checklist and expected to fill it in. It's one of those things.
In one of my organizations (actually more than one) I removed the internally imposed requirement to audit every supplier once a year to the ISO900 standard. They were a farce. Lots of travel and the SQEs never found anything of substance. Even at our worst or most troublesome suppliers. They always passed with flying colors. When I convinced management to remove the requirement and rely on engineering audits and targeting problem areas with problem suppliers we had 2 things happen: first the SQEs screamed bloody murder as did some old fashioned QA people. Then we started finding real substantive problems. Not necessarily what a third party auditor would call a nonconformance but real problems that were causing real product quality problems - real defects with real costs.
I am only required to audit the high risk suppliers. I have over 80 suppliers - if I audited all of them I really would rack up the airline and hotel points.
Thanks. He's an awesome man and our relationship is much different 54-55 years later, but I stll called him "SIR" though he said to call him Jim. That ain't gonna happen. He was a Grunt like me and did many years on embassy duty.
I've been opting out of the 2nd Party or Supplier audits, they are being offered but those things could really mess up my 3rd party stuff because of COI. As for seeing Supplier audits or the results, they pop up occasionally when I'm doing QMS work but not as often now as they were 20 years ago......Shifting industry trend? Possibly for reasons pointed out, cost, results and relevance.
