Perhaps that he is getting payed by no. of words?

Maybe. It was just distracting and I had to keep re-reading parts to retain what the heck was going on in the story! Unlike "War and Peace" which took me a month, only because I was half-way through and forgot how the darn thing started! :D

I've recently become a fan of James Rollins.

I've tried Clive Cussler - the NUMA series - but decided that his stories have become almost patronizing in the details to the readers. His recent book "Polar Shift" included lines about what the main character made himself for breakfast...how does that fit in with or advance the plot of the earth's magnetic poles shifting?!?! In fact, I finally managed to finish "Polar Shift" - had to force myself - and left the book in my hotel room's garbage can.
Lots of authors have picked up the "thing" of details from Ian Flemming whose James Bond smoked a certain brand and had his drinks mixed "just so." Problem is, in a ham fisted author's hands, those details seem like padding, similar to magazine "potboilers" who get paid by the word.

Well, bad news in the Fantasy Fiction genre. James Oliver Rigney...aka Robert Jordan passed a few days ago after years of battling Amyloidosis.

He leaves behind an epic collection of fantasy literature entitled The Wheel of Time which earned him a chair with the contemporary greats of this genre. The final book, although unfinished, will be co-authored based on his many notes and instructions.

I remember reading these books when I was in high school. They are definately a must for anyone who enjoys the genre. James Rigney will be missed by many as a friend and author who brought excitment, mischief, love, laughter, sorrow, happiness, and creativity into so very many lives through his writing and creativity.

Wow! A sad day. Rare disease too. He was only 59.

I love this series and have re-read it several times. I can't imagine how different the final book will be with Harriet (his wife) finishing it. Thanks Benjamin for letting me know there is another WOT fan in quality land.

I just started reading the series, after my Brother-in-Law turned me on to it. Great stuff.

A newspaper report in Charleston, SC last week said that RJ was stable, and that he expected to finish the last book. They were obviously wrong. :(

Hello, a new author to try if you like "urban fantasy" - Jim Butcher and the Dresden Files. He's up to 9 published in this series with a 10th due out in 2008. The main protagonist is Harry Dresden, a practicing wizard living in Chicago. You can check out excerpts from his books at: https://www.jim-butcher.com/books/

Vey good read - good enough that I bought the 2007 book in Hard Back rather than waiting for paper back.

He also has a more traditional fantsy series out under the "Codex Alera" name. I haven't tried that series yet, so can't make a recommendation 1 way or the other.

Hope some of you read and enjoy him.

I saw one episode of a syndicated TV series based on the Dresden books. I thought it was above-average for the genre. I hadn't realized until your post that there were books of Dresden. Based on your recommendation, I'll check my library first, then Amazon. Thanks for the heads up!
