Not a book, but good!

King of the Rocket Men (1949)

"A villain who calls himself Dr. Vulcan uses a remote control to kill a group of atomic researchers one by one in this classic sci-fi serial from the days of kid-centered Saturday matinees. Believing Dr. Vulcan is a member of their team who wants to grab all the glory of their technological discoveries for himself, one of the scientists (Tristram Coffin) dons an experimental rocket suit and takes to the skies to battle the evil adversary."

Hey Marc, I remember Saturdays and watching Rocket Men. Wow! For 50 cents you could get in from about 9:30 til noon, get a soda, some popcorn, & candy. There'd be the newsreel, a couple of serials, and the movie...or you could save on the candy and after the movie get a new comic for a dime.

I remember something similar, except we sat on the floor of the cigar store that sold magazines, newspapers, and comics and read through every new comic, without buying any!

The Ferndale theater was my baby sitter for a few summers. Thunderbird's marionette movies, Disney nature movie..candy, popcorn...then getting out just in time to walk with my mom home from work.....one mile. Got to take a cab when her feet hurt too much or it rained.

Oh man, Belleville, IL circa 1957, some of the guys did the same thing except they kept them...I learned the phrase "to kype" but never practiced it cause I knew I'd get caught.

I loved sci-fi movies based on books by Jules Verne viz: 'A journey to the center of earth' and '20000 league under the sea'. These were too good for me as a kid, and later I admired them for their accuracy w.r.t. science & maths. These IMO are ever green.

I think that the advances in cinema have really stimulated interested and created fans of scifi. It is amazing to go to a theater and enjoy the experience that these movies are so adapt at giving you now compared to several years ago.

Just got a Kindle so I have been looking at this thread again. Lots of good suggestions.

If you like alternative history fantasy books I recommend the series Novels of the Change by S. M. Stirling. The series was written over the last 5 years or so and the latest in the series was published this year. The first in the series is set in 1998 when all electricity, motor power and modern weapons stop working resulting in a return to medieval times of agriculture and sword fighting. The last book has taken this alternative history up to 2025. Has both science fiction and fantasy in it.

Sorry for hi-jacking the post, but I just read an excellent Sci-Fi book from a new author. (first book)

It's titled Spectra, by Joanne Elder.

Highly recommended read. Sequel coming out later this year apparently. :agree1:

My brother recommended The Chronicles of the Black Company by Glen Cook.

I haven't had the opportunity because I've been working 2 jobs and 7 days a week so little to no time for anything.

It may not be sci-fi but they lump fantasy in with sci-fi or vice versa when categorizing at most book stores.

Terry Brooks has come out with a couple more Shannara/Word books.

Terry Goodkind has come out with another series of Richard and Kahlan after dabbling in fiction.

My 2 favorite fantasy authors are those 2. They probably have 30 books out between the 2 of them.
