PC Era will End in 18 Months

I have a desktop and a windows 8 pro tablet at home. I do most of my 'grunt work' on the desktop and use the tablet for travel or while away from my desktop. I will use it to do quick updates or small changes. I don't really like to do 'grunt work' on the tablet even though I have a mouse and keyboard. I have a laptop but no longer use it as the tablet is much more portable.

About the time of the post I had a full sized laptop (15.6" screen) and a netbook for when I needed to travel light. I now have an 'ultrabook' (screen size of 13.3") and a Blackberry Z10.

OK, I kept the netbook for emergency situations but the Z10 is plenty good enough to keep up with my email and calendar. However, I still use my desktop PC for almost all of my serious work at home.

Interesting dichotomy...handhelds get smaller and smaller...then they get bigger and bigger!

I skipped the Galaxy, got the Galaxy II which was bigger. The main selling point of the Galaxy III was speed...the main sell for the Galaxy IV was that it was bigger...go figure.
My neighbor got a Phablet...may as well be an iPad that he holds up to his ear.

handhelds give pocket portability, for now, but your pockets have to grow to hold the next generations... and desktop monitors get bigger. I'm looking at a 36" LCD TV to use as one of two monitors...why in the world would I consider working on 4x6" phones?

My phone let's me know what emails I'm walking into in the morning...but the replies come from a 17" monitor and full sized keyboard.

Best use of my phone is either solitaire or online poker. Sometimes I even use the phone feature, but not often.

Almost 3 years later... :notme:

Digging up an old thread as "Food for Thought"...

Yep, you called it. Windows 8 (designed around the functionality of a tablet or touchscreen) is an absolute bear on a PC and considered by many to be a step backwards, reminiscent of the Vista fiasco. Smartphone and tablet use in the workplace is rampant for sure. Visit any electronics store or boutique and it's plainly evident where the focus is. One of our local stores has a total of two desktop PC systems for sale. No, not two models, two PCs. and it's not a small mom and pop store, but rather a chain store.

Case in point: in our workplace, requesting a laptop from the guys in IT for audits on the floor or on the road is getting more difficult - each time I ask, there seems to be fewer available, solely because they're just getting rid of them. Our production guys are now using ruggedized iPads for consulting drawings, workbooks and work orders, using the built-in cameras for scanning the traveller bar codes and for writing nonconformances.

The time has basically come for me to decide what method I'll be using for my audits. It appears to be the iPad, but we'll see.

I thought gamers were into game consoles. Not a gamer these days, so I have no idea.

I don't play too many computer games anymore, but everything I still play is on PC. I think I have a Super Nintendo somewhere but I don't like console games.

"Gaming" is primarily PC based...full keyboard gives a minimum of 10 controls (one for each finger)...and each finger can move, so 18 controls (thumbs are hard to move).
When I go for computing hardware, there are no macs in sight...only various brands of PC...FWIW...

I'm with Jennifer - I'm already seeing my PC sites behave oddly because they're being "optimized" to run well on phones. My love of phone screens is proportional to their size, and cloud data is just giving it over to somebody else to mine if they so choose - only a problem theoretically but I try to avoid feeding dragons.
