Betcha it wasn't on composite materials.
Correct, the BFH, 2x4, duct tape, bailing wire & beer/coke cans days are petty much gone.

cardboard?
Plastic covered flight plans.

I got a Huey home from McCarren-Hughes Terminal Las Vegas to Ft Irwin with light fiberboard and duct tape over the left chin bubble after a shuttle driver drove right into the nose, knocked the bird about 3ft backwards and tore the crap out of the nose. Maintenance pilot and myself took another bird from home (Ft Irwin) to Vegas so that the General wouldn't have to thumb a ride (about 1 hours at lightspeed, in a Huey about 110 knots), looked it over (I had to disconnect the pedals & cyclic) , signed it off for a 1 time flight and boogied at the breakneck speed of 90 knots to the house. Couple days later the bird was flying missions again and the Hughes Executive Terminal got a bill. Kinda funny all those guys in suits bringing me and my pilot cokes and snacks while apologizing at the same time. (Plus it looked bad with that banged up Huey sitting next to the Gulfstreams & Citations).

Randy, great stuff, insights! Improvisation is priceless...esp. today. I have a close friend flown C-5s, many Boeing and more Airbus aircraft...one thing we agree on, there must always be a battle override for when software, etc. malfunctions
